I’m “Incredibly Excellent” in Chemistry

I had Chemistry paper I and III today, and I must admit myself as an individual who despise Chemistry and yet often make “smart” and unavoidable stupid mistakes during exam.

In paper I, it was given a table showing the electrolysis of dilute sodium chloride solution and dilute silver nitrate solution using carbon electrodes and requires us to state the products formed at the anode and cathode. I was either suffering from degeneration of brain cells or have I just gone entirely dumb to state that “Chlorine” would be formed at the anode for using dilute sodium chloride solution as a electrolyte instead of “Oxygen” gas. I had totally forgotten that:

4OH produces 2H2O + O2 = 2e

I completely ignored “Oxygen” molecules present in hydroxide ions and cancelled it from the selection and circled “Chlorine”!!!! A big bang on my head after I hand up my objective answer sheet.

In paper III, I had mistaken the experiment on investigating the effects of total surface area of reactants on the rate of reaction. Due my inevitable idiocy I burned 3 marks for procedure and 3 marks for tabulation of data, totals up to 6 marks gone!!!! Instead of setting up the materials and apparatus of collecting carbon dioxide gas produced by calcium carbonate through the delivery tube to identify which reaction produces higher volume of carbon dioxide,
I wrote the experiment on investigating the effect of concentration on the rate of reaction regarding pouring sulphuric acid into a conical flask and recoded the time taken for the mark “X’ to disappear by substituting both large marble chips and calcium carbonate powder. I am incredibly a “Chemistry genius”.

Luckily I wasn’t the only one making such a mistake, Wan Fang (usually able to get remarkably high marks for Chemistry)and Bing Min flew to me and griped endlessly after making the same mistake they done. Soon, I shifted to the staffroom and ask Mdm. Cynthia on the marks for paper III and she replied: “It’s alright 6 marks gone only, there are other marks to gain. Don’t worry…”

I am DOOMED.
