National Chemistry Quiz

The National Level Chemistry Quiz was held on 19 July 2007which was yesterday. The quiz runs at several schools here and it is supervised by school-staff and coordinated by a school Quiz coordinator who would be nominated by the school. But unfortunately my school was not selected to participate in this activity *sigh*. However, I did manage to take the quiz in SMK Penrissen No. 1 and yes…

I skip a day of class which I’m quite reluctant to because exam papers were given back on that day!!! The chemistry quiz required a total time slot of 60-70 minutes and the questions are tremendously Difficult I say. I do not consider those questions as a form 4 level standard, but they’re more to general chemistry questions…and LOTS of calculations *sigh again*

Here’s an example:

Below shows a reaction of ethanol with element X to produce a substance Y,

Ethanol + X → Y

Name X and Y.

A. Ethanoic acid CH3COCC2H5
B. Ethanoic acid C2H5COOC2H5

C. Propanoic acid C2H5COOC3H2

D. Propanoic acid C3H2COOC2H5

An organic compound X decolourises dilute acidified aqueous potassium manganate (VII) on warming heat but does not decolourises bromine solution.
What is X?
A. C6HOO
B. C3H2OH

C. CH3COOC2H5

D. CH3COOH

These are only a portion of the questions, although I consider myself as average in chemistry but this is beyond from my expectations!! By the way, I didn't even put effort to study my chemistry book before the Quiz.
